Is there a way to choose what the 'slug' is for a particular post?

Cool URIs don't change, but it would be great to be able to pick a shorter URI for posts with long names before publishing.

When I add a new image through the Markdown editor, select it from my Assets and insert it, it shows up as:

[cms:asset x]

Is there any way I can alter what the alternative text is for this image, as in the alt attribute that will show up in the front-end?

It defaults to file name, so I use that as a workaround, but sometimes I need a different alternative depending on context.
